What is Autism

Autism is a developmental difference that shapes how people perceive, process, and respond to the world. It may influence communication, social skills, sensory experiences, interests, and ways of thinking. Each autistic person is unique, so there’s no single description that applies to all.

At Chatterbox, we acknowledge autism as a natural variation in how people think and interact. We prioritise recognising each child’s unique qualities and needs, collaborating with families to provide support that is respectful, empowering, and customised to the individual.

How can Chatterbox help?

At Chatterbox, our therapists partner with autistic children and their families to nurture each child’s strengths while providing support in areas where challenges may arise. Therapy goals may include the following, but are always personalised to suit the individual child:

Speech Pathology And Autism

Speech therapy aims to offer varied support for autistic children, shaped by their unique abilities, challenges, and ways of communicating. For some, sessions may build spoken language skills; for others, therapy may include visuals, gestures, or AAC to encourage successful communication.
Speech therapy aims to support children to strengthen their understanding of language, share their thoughts, and engage socially in ways that suit them best. At Chatterbox, our therapists use a flexible and respectful approach, working with each child’s unique style and celebrating diverse ways of communication.

Occupational Therapy and Autism

Occupational therapy assists autistic children to participate more fully in daily life, like enjoying play, managing self-care, navigating emotions, and joining in at school. Therapists partner with children and families to explore sensory needs, develop regulation strategies, enhance play and motor skills, and build practical everyday skills. Therapy is directed by the child’s strengths and priorities, aiming to foster independence, confidence, and well-being. At Chatterbox, our OTs follow a respectful, compassionate, neurodiversity-affirming approach that celebrates each child’s unique way of being.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are therapy goals set?

Together with you, we decide on the goals that matter most for your child. From there, we design step-by-step targets that are realistic and achievable, allowing your child to build confidence and enjoy progress.

Goal setting involves looking at your child’s age, developmental progress, and everyday routines so the plan is achievable, valuable, and aligned with how they learn.

Drawing on current research, your clinician will recommend a therapy schedule that suits your child’s needs and supports progress.

For most therapies, that means regular, consistent input. The more opportunities a child has to practise and build on their skills, the better the outcomes tend to be. In an ideal world, this would mean multiple hours of therapy each week. But let’s face it, that’s not always realistic for every family.

There are a few therapies, such as the maintenance stage of stuttering treatment, that may only need less frequent sessions, fortnightly or monthly, though this is uncommon.

Families at Chatterbox can select either 60 or 90 minute sessions. Our therapy is scheduled weekly to align with research, and we also offer additional weekly sessions plus intensive programs, which work well in school holiday breaks.

It’s difficult to predict exactly how long therapy will last, as factors such as age, learning style, personality, developmental progress, and diagnoses all play a role.

With time, your therapist can offer a more detailed idea of what therapy might look like. But progress requires patience, learning takes time, and there is no overnight solution.

All our therapists are qualified, experienced, and registered with Speech Pathology Australia. They’re passionate about helping children grow and thrive through evidence-based, family-friendly support.

Each session, your child will meet with the same speech pathologist, who takes time to know them well and earn their trust. This steady relationship may help your child feel comfortable and ensures therapy is carefully adapted to them.

Because life doesn’t always run to plan, our team-based approach makes a difference. Should your clinician be away, or if you’d like to shift or add an appointment, another skilled clinician can step in so therapy continues smoothly and flexibly.

Because our clinicians work closely together, they can share insights, strategies, and progress so every session feels connected, even with a new face in the room. In fact, seeing a different clinician now and then gives your child the opportunity to practise flexibility, generalise their skills, and work on their confidence with different communication partners, just like they need to do in the real world. Win-win!

The great news is that you can play an active role in helping your child make the most of therapy and continue moving ahead:

  • Attend sessions consistently
  • Keep therapy on track by working on practice tasks outside of sessions
  • Whenever you can, move sessions instead of cancelling to support steady progress
  • Take advantage of holiday intensives
  • Be part of the sessions, because your involvement really counts

Consistency and involvement from you may lead to the best outcomes for your child.
