What is Autism
Autism is a developmental difference that shapes how people perceive, process, and respond to the world. It may influence communication, social skills, sensory experiences, interests, and ways of thinking. Each autistic person is unique, so there’s no single description that applies to all.
At Chatterbox, we embrace autism as an important expression of human diversity. We take time to understand every child’s strengths, challenges, and preferences, working with families to ensure support is empowering, respectful, and responsive to each child’s individuality.
How can Chatterbox help?
At Chatterbox, our therapists collaborate with autistic children and their families to encourage growth in each child’s areas of strength and offer guidance where additional help is needed. Therapy may focus on the following, yet it is always tailored to the child’s unique profile:
Taking the Time to Understand
We spend time getting to know each child and their family, focusing on what truly matters to them, and designing goals that are relevant for their home, school, and community life. Most importantly, we work side by side with families so our support remains respectful, practical, and empowering.
Speech Pathology And Autism
Speech therapy may help autistic children in diverse ways, tailored to each child’s strengths, needs, and preferred communication approach. While some children may work on developing speech, others may benefit from strategies such as visuals, gestures, or AAC to express themselves effectively.
Speech therapy may assist children in improving language understanding, idea expression, and social interaction, while ensuring the process feels natural and comfortable. At Chatterbox, our therapists take a supportive and adaptable approach, honouring each child’s communication strengths and celebrating the many ways they can be heard.
Occupational Therapy and Autism
Occupational therapy assists autistic children to participate more fully in daily life, like enjoying play, managing self-care, navigating emotions, and joining in at school. Therapists partner with children and families to explore sensory needs, develop regulation strategies, enhance play and motor skills, and build practical everyday skills. Therapy is directed by the child’s strengths and priorities, aiming to foster independence, confidence, and well-being. At Chatterbox, our OTs follow a respectful, compassionate, neurodiversity-affirming approach that celebrates each child’s unique way of being.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are therapy goals set?
We work with you to set meaningful goals by first identifying what’s most important for your child and family. Then we break those goals into smaller, practical steps, helping your child grow in confidence and celebrate success along the journey.
As we set goals, we carefully consider your child’s age, current stage, and daily needs, making sure the plan is realistic, personalised, and effective for their way of learning.
How many sessions will my child attend each week?
Based on the latest research and your child’s needs, your clinician will suggest a therapy schedule designed for the best outcomes.
In most cases, therapy works best when it’s regular and consistent. The more chances children have to practise and strengthen their skills, the greater the progress tends to be. Ideally, this would involve several hours of therapy each week, though that isn’t always practical for families.
Some therapies (like the maintenance phase of stuttering therapy) may require reduced intensity (e.g. fortnightly or monthly sessions), but these are the exception, not the rule.
Families at Chatterbox can select either 60 or 90 minute sessions. Our therapy is scheduled weekly to align with research, and we also offer additional weekly sessions plus intensive programs, which work well in school holiday breaks.
How long will my child need therapy?
The length of time a child may attend therapy varies, influenced by things like age, developmental level, learning style, personality, and specific diagnoses, so there isn’t a simple answer for every child.
As your therapist learns more about your child, they can share a clearer picture of the journey ahead. Still, it’s vital to understand that therapy is a gradual process, not a quick fix.
Who will be my child’s speech therapist?
Our therapists are not only qualified and experienced, but also registered with Speech Pathology Australia. They’re committed to guiding children’s development with evidence-based strategies and supportive, family-focused care.
Seeing the same speech pathologist every session allows your child to build a close, trusting connection. That consistency aims to provide a sense of safety and support, making therapy more meaningful.
We know schedules aren’t always perfect, so our connected team is here to help. If your usual clinician can’t make it, or you want to move or add sessions, your child can see another qualified therapist, ensuring therapy stays on track.
Our clinicians collaborate closely, sharing strategies and progress so sessions stay consistent, even if another therapist steps in. Experiencing a new clinician from time to time may also help your child practise flexibility, strengthen generalisation, and gain confidence communicating with different people, just like in everyday life.
How can I get the most out of our therapy sessions?
Good news! There are straightforward strategies you can use to support your child’s therapy and help them keep building skills:
- Keep up with therapy by coming to sessions consistently
- Follow through with practice activities at home between therapy visits
- Move appointments rather than cancel if possible
- Boost progress by joining holiday therapy intensives
- Be part of the sessions, because your involvement really counts
The more consistent and involved you can be, the more your child may benefit.
Do you offer online speech therapy for children?
Yes, we offer flexible options with both in-clinic appointments and online speech and occupational therapy sessions. Online sessions work well for busy families, children who feel secure at home, or those based in rural or remote areas.
