What is Autism

Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that may impact how a person communicates, relates to others, and makes sense of their surroundings. It often affects sensory processing, patterns of interest, and styles of thinking. Every individual on the spectrum is different; there’s no universal profile.

At Chatterbox, we acknowledge autism as a natural variation in how people think and interact. We prioritise recognising each child’s unique qualities and needs, collaborating with families to provide support that is respectful, empowering, and customised to the individual.

How can Chatterbox help?

At Chatterbox, our therapists collaborate with autistic children and their families to encourage growth in each child’s areas of strength and offer guidance where additional help is needed. Therapy may focus on the following, yet it is always tailored to the child’s unique profile:

Taking the Time to Understand

We spend time getting to know each child and their family, focusing on what truly matters to them, and designing goals that are relevant for their home, school, and community life. Most importantly, we work side by side with families so our support remains respectful, practical, and empowering.

Speech Pathology And Autism

Speech therapy aims to offer varied support for autistic children, shaped by their unique abilities, challenges, and ways of communicating. For some, sessions may build spoken language skills; for others, therapy may include visuals, gestures, or AAC to encourage successful communication.
Speech therapy aims to help children develop skills in comprehension, self-expression, and social connection, all in ways that feel authentic and comfortable to them. At Chatterbox, our therapists collaborate with each child, respecting their individual communication profile and valuing every way they connect and express themselves.

Occupational Therapy and Autism

Occupational therapy aims to help autistic children engage in daily routines and meaningful activities, whether it’s playing, dressing, regulating emotions, or taking part in school life. Our therapists collaborate with families to understand sensory differences, build self-regulation, strengthen motor and play skills, and support practical abilities for everyday living. Guided by each child’s goals and interests, therapy aims to nurture confidence, independence, and well-being. At Chatterbox, our OTs embrace a compassionate, neurodiversity-affirming approach that honours every child’s individuality.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are therapy goals set?

Our goal-setting process starts with a conversation with you to uncover what matters most for your child. We then create smaller, achievable steps that support confidence and make success feel within reach.

When setting goals, we also consider your child’s age, developmental stage, and everyday needs to make sure the plan is realistic, meaningful, and tailored to how they learn best.

Your clinician will create a therapy schedule guided by evidence and tailored to what may work best for your child.

Effective therapy usually relies on steady, regular input. Repeated practice gives children more opportunities to grow their skills and reach better outcomes. Ideally, this would be several hours a week, but we know that’s not always manageable for families.

There are a few therapies, such as the maintenance stage of stuttering treatment, that may only need less frequent sessions, fortnightly or monthly, though this is uncommon.

Families at Chatterbox can select either 60 or 90 minute sessions. Our therapy is scheduled weekly to align with research, and we also offer additional weekly sessions plus intensive programs, which work well in school holiday breaks.

We would love to be able to provide an exact answer to this question; however, a number of factors come into play when discussing how long your child may attend therapy, such as your child’s age, personality, learning style, developmental level and diagnoses.

Your therapist can give you a clearer idea once they know your child better, but it’s important to remember that learning is a process, and it takes time. Unfortunately, there is no ‘quick fix’.

Our team of therapists is fully qualified, highly experienced, and registered with Speech Pathology Australia. They care deeply about helping children develop and flourish with evidence-based, family-focused support.

We ensure your child sees the same speech pathologist each session, so they may form a strong, trusting bond. With that consistency, your child may feel safe and supported, and therapy can be tailored more precisely to their needs.

Since life isn’t always predictable, we keep therapy flexible. Whether you need to change an appointment, book extra sessions, or your clinician is away, another member of our experienced team can step in to keep therapy consistent.

Since our team works hand in hand, your child’s goals and progress are always shared, making each session seamless even with a new therapist. Meeting different clinicians now and then may actually benefit your child, potentially helping them adapt, generalise skills, and build confidence across varied communication partners.

The best part? You can do a few simple things at home to boost your child’s therapy and keep their progress moving forward:

  • Attend sessions consistently
  • Complete practice tasks between sessions
  • Whenever you can, move sessions instead of cancelling to support steady progress
  • Boost progress by joining holiday therapy intensives
  • Get involved during sessions — your input makes a difference

When you stay consistent and actively engaged, your child could make the greatest progress.

Absolutely, we provide both in-clinic appointments and online speech and occupational therapy sessions to fit your family’s schedule. Online therapy is especially helpful for families on the go, children who thrive at home, or those living further away.
