What is Autism

Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that may impact how a person communicates, relates to others, and makes sense of their surroundings. It often affects sensory processing, patterns of interest, and styles of thinking. Every individual on the spectrum is different; there’s no universal profile.

At Chatterbox, we acknowledge autism as a natural variation in how people think and interact. We prioritise recognising each child’s unique qualities and needs, collaborating with families to provide support that is respectful, empowering, and customised to the individual.

How can Chatterbox help?

At Chatterbox, our therapists work alongside autistic children and their families to build on each child’s unique strengths and support areas where they may need extra help. Therapy might focus on the following, but are always tailored to the individual child:

Taking the Time to Understand

We take care to connect with every child and their family, listen to what’s meaningful to them, and shape goals that support their everyday experiences at home, in school, and in the community. Most importantly, we partner with families to provide support that is respectful, practical, and empowering.

Speech Pathology And Autism

Speech therapy aims to offer varied support for autistic children, shaped by their unique abilities, challenges, and ways of communicating. For some, sessions may build spoken language skills; for others, therapy may include visuals, gestures, or AAC to encourage successful communication.
Speech therapy may also help build skills in understanding language, expressing ideas, and connecting socially in ways that feel natural and comfortable for the child. At Chatterbox, our therapists take a respectful and flexible approach, always working with each child’s unique communication profile and celebrating the many ways children can connect and be heard.

Occupational Therapy and Autism

Occupational therapy assists autistic children to participate more fully in daily life, like enjoying play, managing self-care, navigating emotions, and joining in at school. Therapists partner with children and families to explore sensory needs, develop regulation strategies, enhance play and motor skills, and build practical everyday skills. Therapy is directed by the child’s strengths and priorities, aiming to foster independence, confidence, and well-being. At Chatterbox, our OTs follow a respectful, compassionate, neurodiversity-affirming approach that celebrates each child’s unique way of being.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are therapy goals set?

We begin by talking with you to understand your big-picture priorities for your child. Then, we shape these into smaller, achievable milestones that make progress clear, confidence stronger, and success possible.

As we set goals, we carefully consider your child’s age, current stage, and daily needs, making sure the plan is realistic, personalised, and effective for their way of learning.

Based on the latest research and your child’s needs, your clinician will suggest a therapy schedule designed for the best outcomes.

In most cases, therapy works best when it’s regular and consistent. The more chances children have to practise and strengthen their skills, the greater the progress tends to be. Ideally, this would involve several hours of therapy each week, though that isn’t always practical for families.

Some therapies, for example the maintenance stage of stuttering intervention, may involve reduced intensity with fortnightly or monthly sessions, but this is rare rather than standard.

We offer both 60-minute and 90-minute sessions at Chatterbox. Weekly therapy is our standard, guided by research, and families can also access extra weekly sessions or intensive programs, ideal during the school holiday period.

We can’t give a one-size-fits-all answer to how long therapy will take, as it depends on many factors including your child’s age, personality, learning style, developmental stage, and any diagnoses.

Once your therapist gets to know your child, they’ll be able to provide a clearer sense of how therapy may unfold. It’s important to keep in mind that progress takes time; there’s no instant solution.

Every therapist on our team is registered with Speech Pathology Australia, bringing both qualifications and experience. They’re dedicated to supporting children’s growth with family-friendly, evidence-based care.

Your child will see the same speech pathologist each session, someone who gets to know them well and builds a strong, trusting relationship over time. Consistency aims to help your child feel safe, supported, and understood, allowing us to tailor therapy in a way that truly works for them.

Because life doesn’t always run to plan, our team-based approach makes a difference. Should your clinician be away, or if you’d like to shift or add an appointment, another skilled clinician can step in so therapy continues smoothly and flexibly.

Since our team works hand in hand, your child’s goals and progress are always shared, making each session seamless even with a new therapist. Meeting different clinicians now and then may actually benefit your child, potentially helping them adapt, generalise skills, and build confidence across varied communication partners.

The best part? You can do a few simple things at home to boost your child’s therapy and keep their progress moving forward:

  • Keep up with therapy by coming to sessions consistently
  • Keep therapy on track by working on practice tasks outside of sessions
  • Reschedule appointments instead of cancelling whenever you can
  • Make the most of therapy intensives during school holidays
  • Get engaged during therapy time, your input truly supports your child’s learning

The steadier and more involved you are, the bigger the potential gains for your child.
