What is Autism

Autism is a neurological difference that affects how people engage with and understand the world. It may shape communication, social interaction, sensory responses, ways of thinking, and personal interests. Each autistic person is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all way to define autism.

At Chatterbox, we see autism as one of the many ways people experience the world. Our approach is centred on recognising each child’s unique abilities and needs, while partnering with families to offer support that is respectful, collaborative, and individually tailored.

How can Chatterbox help?

At Chatterbox, our therapists work closely with autistic children and their families, celebrating individual strengths and addressing areas where extra support may be beneficial. Therapy may include the following, though each plan is customised to the child’s needs:

Taking the Time to Understand

We make the effort to understand every child and their family, learning what’s important to them and setting goals that bring value to daily life at home, school, and in the wider community. Above all, we collaborate with families to ensure our support is respectful, practical, and empowering.

Speech Pathology And Autism

Speech therapy may support autistic children in many different ways, depending on their individual strengths, needs, and communication style. For some children, therapy may focus on developing spoken language; for others, it might involve using visuals, gestures, or AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) to support effective communication.
Speech therapy may assist children in improving language understanding, idea expression, and social interaction, while ensuring the process feels natural and comfortable. At Chatterbox, our therapists take a supportive and adaptable approach, honouring each child’s communication strengths and celebrating the many ways they can be heard.

Occupational Therapy and Autism

Occupational therapy supports autistic children by helping them participate in everyday activities that are meaningful to them, like playing, getting dressed, managing emotions, or joining in at school. Therapists work alongside children and families to understand sensory needs, build regulation strategies, improve their motor and play skills, and develop practical skills for daily life. Therapy is guided by the child’s interests and goals, with a focus on supporting independence, confidence, and well-being. At Chatterbox, our OTs take a compassionate, neurodiversity-affirming approach that respects each child’s unique way of experiencing the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are therapy goals set?

We work with you to set meaningful goals by first identifying what’s most important for your child and family. Then we break those goals into smaller, practical steps, helping your child grow in confidence and celebrate success along the journey.

When setting goals, we also consider your child’s age, developmental stage, and everyday needs to make sure the plan is realistic, meaningful, and tailored to how they learn best.

Based on the latest research and your child’s needs, your clinician will suggest a therapy schedule designed for the best outcomes.

In most cases, therapy works best when it’s regular and consistent. The more chances children have to practise and strengthen their skills, the greater the progress tends to be. Ideally, this would involve several hours of therapy each week, though that isn’t always practical for families.

Some therapies, for example the maintenance stage of stuttering intervention, may involve reduced intensity with fortnightly or monthly sessions, but this is rare rather than standard.

At Chatterbox, families have the option of 60 minute or 90 minute sessions. We offer weekly therapy sessions in line with the research, with options for additional weekly sessions and intensives (a great idea during school holidays!)

There isn’t a single answer to how long therapy might continue, because it depends on individual factors like your child’s age, personality, learning style, developmental level, and diagnoses.

With time, your therapist can offer a more detailed idea of what therapy might look like. But progress requires patience, learning takes time, and there is no overnight solution.

All Chatterbox therapists are Speech Pathology Australia registered, experienced, and highly trained. Their passion lies in helping children thrive using proven, family-centred approaches.

Your child will see the same speech pathologist each session, someone who gets to know them well and builds a strong, trusting relationship over time. Consistency aims to help your child feel safe, supported, and understood, allowing us to tailor therapy in a way that truly works for them.

But life doesn’t always follow a perfect schedule, and that’s where being part of a connected team really helps. Whether your clinician is away, you need to move an appointment, or want to book an extra session, we’ve got your back. We offer families the option for their child to see another one of our qualified clinicians when needed, so therapy stays consistent and flexible.

Our clinicians collaborate closely, sharing strategies and progress so sessions stay consistent, even if another therapist steps in. Experiencing a new clinician from time to time may also help your child practise flexibility, strengthen generalisation, and gain confidence communicating with different people, just like in everyday life.

Here’s the good news, there are easy ways you can support your child to get the best out of therapy and keep progress on track:

  • Attend sessions consistently
  • Help your child by completing practice activities between each therapy session
  • If possible, rebook appointments instead of cancelling to keep consistency
  • Make the most of therapy intensives during school holidays
  • Actively take part in sessions, your support makes a big impact

Consistency and involvement from you may lead to the best outcomes for your child.

Yes! Families can choose between in-clinic appointments and online speech and occupational therapy sessions, depending on what works best. Online sessions are ideal for busy households, kids who prefer home, or families in regional or rural locations.
