What is Autism
Autism is a neurological difference that affects how people engage with and understand the world. It may shape communication, social interaction, sensory responses, ways of thinking, and personal interests. Each autistic person is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all way to define autism.
At Chatterbox, we acknowledge autism as a natural variation in how people think and interact. We prioritise recognising each child’s unique qualities and needs, collaborating with families to provide support that is respectful, empowering, and customised to the individual.
How can Chatterbox help?
At Chatterbox, our therapists partner with autistic children and their families to nurture each child’s strengths while providing support in areas where challenges may arise. Therapy goals may include the following, but are always personalised to suit the individual child:
Taking the Time to Understand
We make the effort to understand every child and their family, learning what’s important to them and setting goals that bring value to daily life at home, school, and in the wider community. Above all, we collaborate with families to ensure our support is respectful, practical, and empowering.
Speech Pathology And Autism
Speech therapy may support autistic children in many different ways, depending on their individual strengths, needs, and communication style. For some children, therapy may focus on developing spoken language; for others, it might involve using visuals, gestures, or AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) to support effective communication.
Speech therapy may assist children in improving language understanding, idea expression, and social interaction, while ensuring the process feels natural and comfortable. At Chatterbox, our therapists take a supportive and adaptable approach, honouring each child’s communication strengths and celebrating the many ways they can be heard.
Occupational Therapy and Autism
Occupational therapy assists autistic children to participate more fully in daily life, like enjoying play, managing self-care, navigating emotions, and joining in at school. Therapists partner with children and families to explore sensory needs, develop regulation strategies, enhance play and motor skills, and build practical everyday skills. Therapy is directed by the child’s strengths and priorities, aiming to foster independence, confidence, and well-being. At Chatterbox, our OTs follow a respectful, compassionate, neurodiversity-affirming approach that celebrates each child’s unique way of being.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are therapy goals set?
Together with you, we decide on the goals that matter most for your child. From there, we design step-by-step targets that are realistic and achievable, allowing your child to build confidence and enjoy progress.
Goal setting involves looking at your child’s age, developmental progress, and everyday routines so the plan is achievable, valuable, and aligned with how they learn.
How many sessions will my child attend each week?
Based on the latest research and your child’s needs, your clinician will suggest a therapy schedule designed for the best outcomes.
In most cases, therapy works best when it’s regular and consistent. The more chances children have to practise and strengthen their skills, the greater the progress tends to be. Ideally, this would involve several hours of therapy each week, though that isn’t always practical for families.
There are a few therapies, such as the maintenance stage of stuttering treatment, that may only need less frequent sessions, fortnightly or monthly, though this is uncommon.
We offer both 60-minute and 90-minute sessions at Chatterbox. Weekly therapy is our standard, guided by research, and families can also access extra weekly sessions or intensive programs, ideal during the school holiday period.
How long will my child need therapy?
There isn’t a single answer to how long therapy might continue, because it depends on individual factors like your child’s age, personality, learning style, developmental level, and diagnoses.
Once your therapist gets to know your child, they’ll be able to provide a clearer sense of how therapy may unfold. It’s important to keep in mind that progress takes time; there’s no instant solution.
Who will be my child’s speech therapist?
Every therapist on our team is registered with Speech Pathology Australia, bringing both qualifications and experience. They’re dedicated to supporting children’s growth with family-friendly, evidence-based care.
Your child will see the same speech pathologist each session, someone who gets to know them well and builds a strong, trusting relationship over time. Consistency aims to help your child feel safe, supported, and understood, allowing us to tailor therapy in a way that truly works for them.
But life doesn’t always follow a perfect schedule, and that’s where being part of a connected team really helps. Whether your clinician is away, you need to move an appointment, or want to book an extra session, we’ve got your back. We offer families the option for their child to see another one of our qualified clinicians when needed, so therapy stays consistent and flexible.
Because our clinicians collaborate, they pass on progress notes, strategies, and goals, so sessions remain connected regardless of who’s in the room. Exposure to different people may benefit your child by helping them to adapt and learn new skills.
How can I get the most out of our therapy sessions?
The great news is that you can play an active role in helping your child make the most of therapy and continue moving ahead:
- Make sure your child attends therapy regularly
- Complete practice tasks between sessions
- Try to shift appointments rather than cancel them outright
- Make the most of therapy intensives during school holidays
- Get engaged during therapy time, your input truly supports your child’s learning
The more consistent and involved you can be, the more your child may benefit.
Do you offer online speech therapy for children?
Yes! Families can choose between in-clinic appointments and online speech and occupational therapy sessions, depending on what works best. Online sessions are ideal for busy households, kids who prefer home, or families in regional or rural locations.
What funding options are available?

Is there a waiting list?
Good news! We currently have no waiting list, which means your child can likely get started straight away. Early support can make a big difference, and we know that delays can be frustrating. That’s why we’ve made it a priority to keep access to therapy as smooth and timely as possible.
