What is Autism

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that influences how a person experiences and interacts with the world around them. It may affect communication, social interaction, thinking styles, sensory processing, and interests. Every autistic person is unique; there’s no one-size-fits-all description.

At Chatterbox, we see autism as one of the many ways people experience the world. Our approach is centred on recognising each child’s unique abilities and needs, while partnering with families to offer support that is respectful, collaborative, and individually tailored.

How can Chatterbox help?

At Chatterbox, our therapists partner with autistic children and their families to nurture each child’s strengths while providing support in areas where challenges may arise. Therapy goals may include the following, but are always personalised to suit the individual child:

Taking the Time to Understand

We take care to connect with every child and their family, listen to what’s meaningful to them, and shape goals that support their everyday experiences at home, in school, and in the community. Most importantly, we partner with families to provide support that is respectful, practical, and empowering.

Speech Pathology And Autism

Speech therapy may support autistic children in many different ways, depending on their individual strengths, needs, and communication style. For some children, therapy may focus on developing spoken language; for others, it might involve using visuals, gestures, or AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) to support effective communication.
Speech therapy may also help build skills in understanding language, expressing ideas, and connecting socially in ways that feel natural and comfortable for the child. At Chatterbox, our therapists take a respectful and flexible approach, always working with each child’s unique communication profile and celebrating the many ways children can connect and be heard.

Occupational Therapy and Autism

Occupational therapy supports autistic children to take part in the activities that matter most to them, such as play, self-care, emotional regulation, and school participation. Working together with families, therapists address sensory needs, build strategies for regulation, enhance motor and play development, and promote everyday life skills. Each program is shaped by the child’s own goals and interests, with an emphasis on independence, confidence, and well-being. At Chatterbox, our OTs practise with compassion and a neurodiversity-affirming approach, valuing every child’s unique perspective.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are therapy goals set?

We begin by talking with you to understand your big-picture priorities for your child. Then, we shape these into smaller, achievable milestones that make progress clear, confidence stronger, and success possible.

Goal setting involves looking at your child’s age, developmental progress, and everyday routines so the plan is achievable, valuable, and aligned with how they learn.

Therapy scheduling is guided by your clinician, who relies on research and experience to recommend what may be most beneficial for your child.

For most therapies, that means regular, consistent input. The more opportunities a child has to practise and build on their skills, the better the outcomes tend to be. In an ideal world, this would mean multiple hours of therapy each week. But let’s face it, that’s not always realistic for every family.

Some therapies (like the maintenance phase of stuttering therapy) may require reduced intensity (e.g. fortnightly or monthly sessions), but these are the exception, not the rule.

At Chatterbox, sessions are available in 60 or 90 minute formats. We deliver weekly therapy consistent with research, with opportunities for extra sessions or intensive blocks, a great option for school holidays.

It’s difficult to predict exactly how long therapy will last, as factors such as age, learning style, personality, developmental progress, and diagnoses all play a role.

With time, your therapist can offer a more detailed idea of what therapy might look like. But progress requires patience, learning takes time, and there is no overnight solution.

Every therapist on our team is registered with Speech Pathology Australia, bringing both qualifications and experience. They’re dedicated to supporting children’s growth with family-friendly, evidence-based care.

Seeing the same speech pathologist every session allows your child to build a close, trusting connection. That consistency aims to provide a sense of safety and support, making therapy more meaningful.

Life can be unpredictable, which is why having a connected team matters. If your clinician is unavailable, you need to reschedule or would like to add another session. We make it simple. Your child can see another qualified clinician, keeping therapy both consistent and flexible.

Because our clinicians collaborate, they pass on progress notes, strategies, and goals, so sessions remain connected regardless of who’s in the room. Exposure to different people may benefit your child by helping them to adapt and learn new skills.

The good news? There are simple things you can do to help your child make the most of therapy and keep things moving forward:

  • Support progress by attending sessions on a regular basis
  • Follow through with practice activities at home between therapy visits
  • If possible, rebook appointments instead of cancelling to keep consistency
  • Consider holiday intensives to give your child extra support during breaks
  • Join in during therapy sessions, your participation helps your child progress

When you stay consistent and actively engaged, your child could make the greatest progress.

That’s right! We provide speech and occupational therapy both in clinic and online , giving families choice and flexibility. Online therapy suits busy families, children who are most comfortable at home, and families living in remote or rural areas.
