What is Autism

Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that may impact how a person communicates, relates to others, and makes sense of their surroundings. It often affects sensory processing, patterns of interest, and styles of thinking. Every individual on the spectrum is different; there’s no universal profile.

At Chatterbox, we acknowledge autism as a natural variation in how people think and interact. We prioritise recognising each child’s unique qualities and needs, collaborating with families to provide support that is respectful, empowering, and customised to the individual.

How can Chatterbox help?

At Chatterbox, our therapists work closely with autistic children and their families, celebrating individual strengths and addressing areas where extra support may be beneficial. Therapy may include the following, though each plan is customised to the child’s needs:

Taking the Time to Understand

We take care to connect with every child and their family, listen to what’s meaningful to them, and shape goals that support their everyday experiences at home, in school, and in the community. Most importantly, we partner with families to provide support that is respectful, practical, and empowering.

Speech Pathology And Autism

Speech therapy may help autistic children in diverse ways, tailored to each child’s strengths, needs, and preferred communication approach. While some children may work on developing speech, others may benefit from strategies such as visuals, gestures, or AAC to express themselves effectively.
Speech therapy may assist children in improving language understanding, idea expression, and social interaction, while ensuring the process feels natural and comfortable. At Chatterbox, our therapists take a supportive and adaptable approach, honouring each child’s communication strengths and celebrating the many ways they can be heard.

Occupational Therapy and Autism

Occupational therapy supports autistic children to take part in the activities that matter most to them, such as play, self-care, emotional regulation, and school participation. Working together with families, therapists address sensory needs, build strategies for regulation, enhance motor and play development, and promote everyday life skills. Each program is shaped by the child’s own goals and interests, with an emphasis on independence, confidence, and well-being. At Chatterbox, our OTs practise with compassion and a neurodiversity-affirming approach, valuing every child’s unique perspective.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are therapy goals set?

We work with you to set meaningful goals by first identifying what’s most important for your child and family. Then we break those goals into smaller, practical steps, helping your child grow in confidence and celebrate success along the journey.

When we design goals, we factor in your child’s age, development, and everyday life so the plan is meaningful, practical, and tailored to support their learning.

Your clinician will recommend a therapy schedule based on current research and what’s likely to be most beneficial for your child.

Therapies are generally most effective with frequent, consistent sessions. Each opportunity to practise helps children build on their skills and achieve stronger results. While the ideal might be multiple therapy hours every week, this isn’t realistic for every family.

In certain cases, like when a child is in the maintenance phase of stuttering therapy, sessions may be less frequent (fortnightly or monthly), but this isn’t typical.

At Chatterbox, you can choose between 60-minute and 90-minute sessions. We provide weekly therapy based on research recommendations, with the flexibility to add extra weekly sessions or take part in intensives, which may be especially useful during school holidays.

The length of time a child may attend therapy varies, influenced by things like age, developmental level, learning style, personality, and specific diagnoses, so there isn’t a simple answer for every child.

As your therapist learns more about your child, they can share a clearer picture of the journey ahead. Still, it’s vital to understand that therapy is a gradual process, not a quick fix.

Our therapists are not only qualified and experienced, but also registered with Speech Pathology Australia. They’re committed to guiding children’s development with evidence-based strategies and supportive, family-focused care.

Seeing the same speech pathologist every session allows your child to build a close, trusting connection. That consistency aims to provide a sense of safety and support, making therapy more meaningful.

We know schedules aren’t always perfect, so our connected team is here to help. If your usual clinician can’t make it, or you want to move or add sessions, your child can see another qualified therapist, ensuring therapy stays on track.

Because our clinicians work closely together, they can share insights, strategies, and progress so every session feels connected, even with a new face in the room. In fact, seeing a different clinician now and then gives your child the opportunity to practise flexibility, generalise their skills, and work on their confidence with different communication partners, just like they need to do in the real world. Win-win!

The best part? You can do a few simple things at home to boost your child’s therapy and keep their progress moving forward:

  • Ensure therapy sessions are attended consistently to build momentum
  • Keep therapy on track by working on practice tasks outside of sessions
  • Whenever you can, move sessions instead of cancelling to support steady progress
  • Consider holiday intensives to give your child extra support during breaks
  • Be part of the sessions, because your involvement really counts

Your child may benefit most when you’re consistent and take an active role in their therapy journey.
