What is Autism
Autism is a neurological difference that affects how people engage with and understand the world. It may shape communication, social interaction, sensory responses, ways of thinking, and personal interests. Each autistic person is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all way to define autism.
At Chatterbox, we embrace autism as an important expression of human diversity. We take time to understand every child’s strengths, challenges, and preferences, working with families to ensure support is empowering, respectful, and responsive to each child’s individuality.
How can Chatterbox help?
At Chatterbox, our therapists partner with autistic children and their families to nurture each child’s strengths while providing support in areas where challenges may arise. Therapy goals may include the following, but are always personalised to suit the individual child:
Taking the Time to Understand
We make the effort to understand every child and their family, learning what’s important to them and setting goals that bring value to daily life at home, school, and in the wider community. Above all, we collaborate with families to ensure our support is respectful, practical, and empowering.
Speech Pathology And Autism
Speech therapy provides flexible support for autistic children, depending on their individual profiles and communication styles. For some, therapy may target spoken language development; for others, it may use visuals, gestures, or AAC to promote clear and effective communication.
Speech therapy aims to help children develop skills in comprehension, self-expression, and social connection, all in ways that feel authentic and comfortable to them. At Chatterbox, our therapists collaborate with each child, respecting their individual communication profile and valuing every way they connect and express themselves.
Occupational Therapy and Autism
Occupational therapy aims to help autistic children engage in daily routines and meaningful activities, whether it’s playing, dressing, regulating emotions, or taking part in school life. Our therapists collaborate with families to understand sensory differences, build self-regulation, strengthen motor and play skills, and support practical abilities for everyday living. Guided by each child’s goals and interests, therapy aims to nurture confidence, independence, and well-being. At Chatterbox, our OTs embrace a compassionate, neurodiversity-affirming approach that honours every child’s individuality.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are therapy goals set?
Together with you, we decide on the goals that matter most for your child. From there, we design step-by-step targets that are realistic and achievable, allowing your child to build confidence and enjoy progress.
When we design goals, we factor in your child’s age, development, and everyday life so the plan is meaningful, practical, and tailored to support their learning.
How many sessions will my child attend each week?
Based on the latest research and your child’s needs, your clinician will suggest a therapy schedule designed for the best outcomes.
In most cases, therapy works best when it’s regular and consistent. The more chances children have to practise and strengthen their skills, the greater the progress tends to be. Ideally, this would involve several hours of therapy each week, though that isn’t always practical for families.
In certain cases, like when a child is in the maintenance phase of stuttering therapy, sessions may be less frequent (fortnightly or monthly), but this isn’t typical.
We offer both 60-minute and 90-minute sessions at Chatterbox. Weekly therapy is our standard, guided by research, and families can also access extra weekly sessions or intensive programs, ideal during the school holiday period.
How long will my child need therapy?
There isn’t a single answer to how long therapy might continue, because it depends on individual factors like your child’s age, personality, learning style, developmental level, and diagnoses.
With time, your therapist can offer a more detailed idea of what therapy might look like. But progress requires patience, learning takes time, and there is no overnight solution.
Who will be my child’s speech therapist?
All Chatterbox therapists are Speech Pathology Australia registered, experienced, and highly trained. Their passion lies in helping children thrive using proven, family-centred approaches.
Each session, your child will meet with the same speech pathologist, who takes time to know them well and earn their trust. This steady relationship may help your child feel comfortable and ensures therapy is carefully adapted to them.
But life doesn’t always follow a perfect schedule, and that’s where being part of a connected team really helps. Whether your clinician is away, you need to move an appointment, or want to book an extra session, we’ve got your back. We offer families the option for their child to see another one of our qualified clinicians when needed, so therapy stays consistent and flexible.
Because our clinicians work closely together, they can share insights, strategies, and progress so every session feels connected, even with a new face in the room. In fact, seeing a different clinician now and then gives your child the opportunity to practise flexibility, generalise their skills, and work on their confidence with different communication partners, just like they need to do in the real world. Win-win!
How can I get the most out of our therapy sessions?
The great news is that you can play an active role in helping your child make the most of therapy and continue moving ahead:
- Attend sessions consistently
- Help your child by completing practice activities between each therapy session
- Reschedule appointments instead of cancelling whenever you can
- Use holiday breaks as an opportunity for intensive therapy sessions
- Join in during therapy sessions, your participation helps your child progress
Your child may benefit most when you’re consistent and take an active role in their therapy journey.
Do you offer online speech therapy for children?
Yes! We offer both in-clinic appointments and online speech and occupational therapy sessions to suit your family’s needs. Online therapy is a great option for busy families, children who feel most comfortable at home, or those living in remote or rural areas.
