What is Autism

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that influences how a person experiences and interacts with the world around them. It may affect communication, social interaction, thinking styles, sensory processing, and interests. Every autistic person is unique; there’s no one-size-fits-all description.

At Chatterbox, we view autism as a natural part of human diversity. We focus on understanding each child’s individual strengths, needs, and preferences, and we work alongside families to provide support that is respectful, empowering, and tailored to each child.

How can Chatterbox help?

At Chatterbox, our therapists work alongside autistic children and their families to build on each child’s unique strengths and support areas where they may need extra help. Therapy might focus on the following, but are always tailored to the individual child:

Speech Pathology And Autism

Speech therapy provides flexible support for autistic children, depending on their individual profiles and communication styles. For some, therapy may target spoken language development; for others, it may use visuals, gestures, or AAC to promote clear and effective communication.
Speech therapy may also help build skills in understanding language, expressing ideas, and connecting socially in ways that feel natural and comfortable for the child. At Chatterbox, our therapists take a respectful and flexible approach, always working with each child’s unique communication profile and celebrating the many ways children can connect and be heard.

Occupational Therapy and Autism

Occupational therapy assists autistic children to participate more fully in daily life, like enjoying play, managing self-care, navigating emotions, and joining in at school. Therapists partner with children and families to explore sensory needs, develop regulation strategies, enhance play and motor skills, and build practical everyday skills. Therapy is directed by the child’s strengths and priorities, aiming to foster independence, confidence, and well-being. At Chatterbox, our OTs follow a respectful, compassionate, neurodiversity-affirming approach that celebrates each child’s unique way of being.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are therapy goals set?

Together with you, we decide on the goals that matter most for your child. From there, we design step-by-step targets that are realistic and achievable, allowing your child to build confidence and enjoy progress.

Goal setting involves looking at your child’s age, developmental progress, and everyday routines so the plan is achievable, valuable, and aligned with how they learn.

Your clinician will recommend a therapy schedule based on current research and what’s likely to be most beneficial for your child.

In most cases, therapy works best when it’s regular and consistent. The more chances children have to practise and strengthen their skills, the greater the progress tends to be. Ideally, this would involve several hours of therapy each week, though that isn’t always practical for families.

Some therapies (like the maintenance phase of stuttering therapy) may require reduced intensity (e.g. fortnightly or monthly sessions), but these are the exception, not the rule.

We offer both 60-minute and 90-minute sessions at Chatterbox. Weekly therapy is our standard, guided by research, and families can also access extra weekly sessions or intensive programs, ideal during the school holiday period.

It’s difficult to predict exactly how long therapy will last, as factors such as age, learning style, personality, developmental progress, and diagnoses all play a role.

Once your therapist gets to know your child, they’ll be able to provide a clearer sense of how therapy may unfold. It’s important to keep in mind that progress takes time; there’s no instant solution.

Our team of therapists is fully qualified, highly experienced, and registered with Speech Pathology Australia. They care deeply about helping children develop and flourish with evidence-based, family-focused support.

We ensure your child sees the same speech pathologist each session, so they may form a strong, trusting bond. With that consistency, your child may feel safe and supported, and therapy can be tailored more precisely to their needs.

Because life doesn’t always run to plan, our team-based approach makes a difference. Should your clinician be away, or if you’d like to shift or add an appointment, another skilled clinician can step in so therapy continues smoothly and flexibly.

Since our team works hand in hand, your child’s goals and progress are always shared, making each session seamless even with a new therapist. Meeting different clinicians now and then may actually benefit your child, potentially helping them adapt, generalise skills, and build confidence across varied communication partners.

The best part? You can do a few simple things at home to boost your child’s therapy and keep their progress moving forward:

  • Support progress by attending sessions on a regular basis
  • Follow through with practice activities at home between therapy visits
  • Try to shift appointments rather than cancel them outright
  • Take advantage of holiday intensives
  • Actively take part in sessions, your support makes a big impact

Your child may benefit most when you’re consistent and take an active role in their therapy journey.
